Studying at a Foreign University for Partial Credit toward a Technion Degree

The Technion offers Undergraduate students the opportunity to spend a semester or two abroad. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience academic life at another institution, and to learn about other cultures and countries

Definitions

  • Student-Exchange is a program that allows students to study at a foreign university while paying regular tuition to the Technion.
  • Study-Abroad is a program that allows students to study at a foreign university while paying tuition to the foreign university.
  • Host University refers to the foreign university in which a student visits and studies either as a Student Exchange or as a Study Abroad.
  • Partner University is a university with whom the Technion has signed an agreement allowing students to visit as a Student Exchange. Some partner universities include agreements only for specific faculties within the Technion. Some universities include agreements for all Technion faculties.
  • Home Faculty refers to the faculty at the Technion where the student is studying and registered.

Fees

  • Student visiting a partner university (on a Student exchange) pay tuition to the Technion. They may be required to pay additional payments such as a processing or administration fee to the university they visit.
  • Students visiting a non-partner university (on a Study Abroad) must take a leave of absence from the Technion and pay required tuition and additional fees of the Host University.
  • ALL students are responsible for medical and travel insurance.
  • ALL students are responsible for costs of travel, visa, dorms or housing, books, food and all other costs abroad.
  • Students are responsible for the costs of any additional exams required by the Host University.

Eligibility

Studies outside Technion are an appropriate option for  …

  • Any student with a cumulative GPA of 80 or above
  • No previous disciplinary problems at the Technion.
  • Undergraduate Students in a 4 year program can study outside the Technion for their 5th or 6th semester.
  • Undergraduate students in a 3 year program can go for their 3rd or 4th semester.
  • Graduate students must complete at least two semesters of study at the Technion before they can go abroad.
  • Any requests by students not meeting the above criteria need to be reviewed by a special committee.

Application

Applications for studies at a foreign university are submitted to the Technion Center of International Academic Relations (CIAR).

All application materials must be submitted in duplicate (original and one copy):

  • An up-to-date transcript of grades IN ENGLISH.
  • A Resume (CV) (IN ENGLISH)
  • Letter of Intent explaining the student’s goals in the studies at a foreign university and the student’s fit to represent the Technion abroad.
  • Names of 3-5 optional foreign universities, with a rating of priorities.
  • A completed application form (available on the CIAR website) signed by the Home Faculty.
  • Two current pictures.
  • Note: Partner Universities limit the number of Technion students they are willing to host. Decisions about placement are made by a special Technion committee.

Dates and Deadlines

  • Universities abroad maintain their own deadlines for applications. Students must check through the web the application deadlines for desired Host Universities.
  • Applications must reach the CIAR office by January 10th.
  • Confirmation of Technion that student is eligible for studies in a foreign university (February 20th).
  • Confirmation of acceptance to studies at particular Host University depends on the deadlines of the Host University.

Comments

  • There is no guarantee that a student will be admitted for studies at any particular university abroad. The decision depends on availability of room at the Host University and made by the Host University.
  • The student is solely responsible for all the application processes. The CIAR office does its best to assist, but cannot be held responsible for applications of individual students. 
  • The CIAR office cannot approve specific courses that students take abroad. Before leaving Israel a student must prepare a list of potential courses to study abroad, and receive approval for this list from their Home Faculty. Only courses approved by the Home Faculty will be recognized towards a Technion degree.
  • Some Host Universities require students to complete various application materials online. Students must follow the instructions of Host University.
  • Some Host Universities require proof of knowledge of English and/ or other languages through exams such as TOEFL or IELTS. Students are responsible to provide this proof.
  • A student MUST return to the Technion for at least one semester in order to graduate from the Technion.
